Designing our company's impact

As a member of the Design team here at Nutrient, my work involves a lot of different tasks — from creating tiny 16×16px icons, to designing full pages, illustrations, swag, and even conference setups. This variety keeps the job exciting and diverse, always pushing me to innovate and improve.

From the moment I joined the company, it was clear that this organization truly understands and values design. Unlike other places I’ve worked, design at Nutrient is a core element of our identity. Our CEO encapsulated this perfectly by saying, “It’s important to have design sit equally with product, engineering, marketing, and sales in a company so that they’re involved at the very beginning and not an afterthought after all the decisions have been made.” This recognition of the importance of building good design into a product both fuels my passion and drives me to deliver my best, alongside an incredible team of designers.

I began with a bit of my background — not to indulge in self-promotion, but because I believe many of you working in branding, web, and product design can relate to my experience. The joys and challenges of working in a place that respects and prioritizes design are unparalleled.

Our team of four designers not only works independently, but also collaborates with and supports various other departments at the company — from engineering and product, to marketing and sales. Our role is pivotal because design, as a cross-functional entity, brings cohesion and unity to a brand’s visual and experiential touch points.

An independent design team

Being an independent design team brings numerous advantages. One of the greatest benefits is that we can identify, define, and manage the key elements and qualities that elevate the Nutrient brand, ensuring consistency and building trust with our customers. Below are five of these key qualities:

  1. Unified visual identity — We ensure every visual element aligns with the brand’s identity, creating a cohesive look across all platforms and materials.

  2. Consistent brand experience — Our team works diligently to maintain a consistent brand experience, which helps in building and maintaining customer trust.

  3. Innovative solutions — Independence allows us to bring fresh, innovative solutions to the table, enhancing the overall user experience.

  4. Cross-department collaboration — By working with various teams, we ensure that every project, big or small, adheres to our high design standards, enhancing the overall quality of our outputs.

  5. Design thinking — One of the benefits of being involved from the start is that design is integrated into projects from the outset, ensuring it plays a key role in the decision-making process.

Independent but not alone

In spite of being an independent team with a lot of freedom, our work isn’t done in isolation. It requires active collaboration with all other teams, which keeps us in the loop and allows us to contribute our expertise effectively. I’m always thrilled when team members approach us for help in delivering visual output. It’s also truly rewarding when our collaborative efforts result in materials that accurately reflect our brand values. Building trust internally is a vital process that encourages team members to comfortably seek help when needed. It’s essential to nurture this culture, as it empowers us to consistently elevate the quality of our design work.

Conclusion

In the era of AI, design is evolving. AI will undoubtedly help us speed up processes, but ensuring consistency and quality still demands a thorough human touch. Curating and maintaining a brand’s visual integrity will always require careful oversight and a dedicated eye for detail.

Being part of this particular design team is incredibly rewarding. The recognition of our work, the independence we have, and the collaborative spirit across departments make it a unique and fulfilling experience. Together, we strive to deliver the best design and visual experiences, upholding Nutrient’s brand prestige and trustworthiness every step of the way.
