The Conversion Service does not start

In very rare occasions the Conversion Service fails to start after installation with a low level Windows Error such as the following.

Faulting application name: Muhimbi.DocumentConverter.Service.exe, version: 5.1.0.51, time stamp: 0x4e67735e

Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17651, time stamp: 0x4e21213c

The most common causes and solutions for this problem are:

  1. An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is active on the machine running the Conversion Service, e.g. the one that comes with McAfee. This service may not recognise the Conversion Service / Account that is running the service and stops it from starting up. The solution is to add the Conversion Service as an exception (Muhimbi.DocumentConverter.Service.exe).

  2. A rule may be enabled in your anti-virus software that stops executables with multiple periods in the filename from executing. Either disable this facility or add the Conversion Service as an exception (Muhimbi.DocumentConverter.Service.exe).

  3. The account the Conversion Service is running under may be corrupt. Create a new account that has local Administrator rights, and is allowed to Log-on as a Service and use that as the Conversion Server service account.
